Growing up in St. Louis, Matt Alber found his voice in a choir singing classical lieder and choral works.

Today, his acoustic music is more “Elton John meets Jason Mraz,” the 37-year-old singer/songwriter said recently.

“It’s a little lighter.”

Alber said he was looking forward to his upcoming trip to the desert and then the coast after a rainy couple of weeks at home on Vashon Island, WA.

“I played  a couple of years ago at Blame It On Midnight,” he recalled. “I liked Palm Springs. The audience was great.”

Alber performed Monday at Azul in downtown Palm Springs

and is now headed to San Diego at

Musically, Alber bounced from Georges Bizet to Mariah Carey, “and pretty everything in between,” during his teens.

“My heart was in both worlds,” he said. “They each spoke to a different side of me.”

Alber didn’t see a schism in expressing himself in both the pop and classical genres.

“I love Baroque and French art songs, the melodies are beautiful and they push me artistically,” he said. “But I also joined BMG Music Club and ordered Elton John’s ‘Greatest Hits’ and Def Leppard’s ‘Hysteria’ and a bunch of other stuff, and listened to all of it.”

Classical won out when Alber graduated from college.

His first long-term professional job was with Chanticleer, the Grammy Award-winning a cappella choir.

“I sang with them for five years before I decided that it was time to quit,” he said.

“Then I bought a computer and spent the next two years trying to teach myself how to use it to record my music. That was fun.”

Alber also started writing for himself, inspired by John and other singer/songwriters.

His songs “Monarch” and “End of the World” are on YouTube and

His stage show, he said, is  a mix of original  music

“and some covers that I love.”
