Festival of Sail 2011..LABOR DAY WEEKEND…make plans NOW!!


The historic port of San Diego Bay is a fitting location for the annual Festival of Sail at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The event showcases more than 20 tall ships and other historic and unique vessels from around the world, and is hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego.

The San Diego Festival of Sail will take place

from September 1st – 5th, 2011.

The event is held over Labor Day weekend each year and starts with a bang!

Cannon fire will salute the entrance of the tall ships from all over the world as they parade around San Diego Bay passing by Harbor Island, Shelter Island, Seaport Village and the Coronado Bridge ending up at the Maritime Museum’s docks.

Several ships will engage in cannon battle reenactments on San Diego Bay during the festival. In addition, 12-pound cannons, known as Napoleons, will be fired to salute morning and dusk. The museum’s Shore Battery Artillery Team will also salute the ships with several rounds of fire as they pass by during the parade. The unit will demonstrate how the guns are cleaned and then will fire the three and four pound guns for a “noon salute” each day as well as firing volleys at the ships during the Gun Battles on the Bay.

Ships at the festival will include the tall ship of California, the Californian,
a replica of the original America’s Cup racing yacht America, the Gaff topsail schooner Bill of Rights, the Brigantine from Antigua, the Kaisei and many more.

The five day event includes live entertainment from a variety of genres including; Contemporary Rock, Sea Chanteys, Mariachis, Steel Drum Bands, local community groups, etc.

They will have a petting zoo where kids can get up close and pet a variety of animals. Cruises on San Diego Bay, cannon battles, sailing on racing yachts,

over 150 arts and craft vendors, multitude of food options, interaction with pirates, and more.
