REVIEW: Haleiwa Joe’s …..Haiku Gardens, Hawaii

You may wonder why it is called Haleiwa Joe’s when it is in Haiku Gardens. Well that is because the original Haleiwa Joe’s was and is still in Haleiwa. There used to be one in Rancho Mirage, just a couple miles from Palm Springs, that we went to all the time as well.

It was on our last night back “home” and I wanted to go some place “Islandy”. Since we were in Kaneohe, I thought of Joe’s. I remember attending many a function “back in the day” (what does that phrase really mean?) when the loction was simply called Haiku Gardens. Luau’s weddings, birthday parties, lots of good memories. The setting is stunning…. The restaurant sits up on the hill overlooking a pond and gazebo with the backdrop of the Koolau mountains.

Looking down to the pond ……

……..and up to the  restaurant

We were there on a slower Monday night which made it very relaxed and peaceful. We opted to forgo appetizers and do salads instead. The house salad with the sesame/miso dressing was nice and light. For entree’s we had the coconut shrimp, lightly breaded with coconut flakes

and I tried the Island fish prepared “chinese style ” with ginger, scallions, and cilantro all wrapped in ti leaves and steamed. I was nervous as I had never heard of the fish and it was described to be like a swordfish. Not liking dense fish I was afraid of it being dry. The waiter promised it would not be. The kitchen did not make a liar out of him. It was moist and delicious.

They have a very good selection of wine and VERY reasonably priced. We had the Sienna.

I have seen this for twice the price on  their wine list…

Dinner too formal? Happy Hour at Haleiwa Joe’s may hit the spot.

Great pupus and Joe’s drink specials
